Argos finds first quarter of 2015 "challenging"

Catalogue company sees sales slip but Home Retail chief John Walden remains confident in ongoing transformation plan.

Home Retail Group reveals a 2.6% slip in first quarter sales, and in the 13 weeks to the end of May, sales were down 3.9% like-for-like at £846million. The group's DIY store Homebase fared better, however, with sales climbing 5.4% on a like-for-like basis.

The figures also revealed a change in the way Argos's shoppers were buying. In the quarter, online sales grew by 2%, accounting for 44% of sales overall.

Mobile commerce was also up by 15%, representing a quarter of those online sales.

John Walden, Home Retail Group chief executive, said: "We continue to expect that sales will be challenging during the first half at Argos, but we look forward to a stronger second half as we progress the Transformation Plan and introduce new propositions more broadly to the market."
