Gifts that give back – shoppers encouraged to buy with a social conscience this Christmas

This Christmas shoppers are being given a new and easy way to buy gifts that have a positive impact on people and the planet.

Baby clothes that support orphaned children, pants that better fund cotton growers and beer that supports causes fighting prostate cancer are some of the gift ideas published on the online Buy Social Christmas Gift Guide, created by Social Enterprise UK.

Social enterprises are businesses that tackle social and environmental problems and reinvest profits for a social cause. There are 70,000 social enterprises in the UK, which contribute £24 billion to the economy and employ almost a million people.

Peter Holbrook, chief executive of Social Enterprise UK, said: ‘Every product and service you buy has a social or environmental impact, so why not make it a good one? When you buy from a social enterprise, you get a great gift as well as help tackle some of the world’s most pressing social problems, like food waste or unemployment.

‘Christmas is the perfect opportunity to buy from businesses that give back, and our gift guide is here to help.’
