Maclaren celebrates 50th Anniversary

Celebrating their 50th Anniversary, parenting experts Maclaren have joined Elephant Family to run the Ella_phant Competition, alongside Elephant Story-Times which ran throughout June, in a bid to save the Asian Elephant from extinction through art and education.

As one of the leaders in the parenting industry, Maclaren’s ( birthday wish is to make the world a better place for generations to come, ensuring that everyone has a happy and healthy planet to fulfil whatever their future may hold. They are calling on children of Britain to help save Asia’s last remaining elephants from extinction.

On Thursday 11 June 2015, HRH the Duchess of Cornwall, Joint President with HRH the Prince of Wales of Elephant Family, and more than fifty children from local schools came to Duke of York Square, Chelsea, to unwrap the magnificent 10ft tall model elephant Tara – Maclaren’s gift to the children of London to celebrate their 50th Anniversary.

Tara is a real Asian elephant living in Madhya Pradesh, India. Rescued by adventurer and conservationist, Mark Shand, Camilla Cornwall’s late brother, together they went on a 1,000-mile journey across India, inspiring Mark to write ‘Travels on My Elephant’ and launch Elephant Family. More than 20 years later, Maclaren’s Tara pays homage to Mark’s much-loved travel companion.

Ella_phant Competition – Entries to be submitted by 1 August 2015

Named after Maclaren’s endearing plush toy, children across the UK are invited to submit a design for this baby elephant Ella, as part of the Ella_phant Competition. As well as receiving a generous shopping spree at, the winning design will be interpreted by a top creative who will paint Ella in her party dress. Resplendent in her new outfit, Ella will travel to Sotheby’s in New York City to be auctioned on October 27 to benefit Elephant Family.

Competition Entry Guidelines: Children across the UK, age 12 and under are invited to submit a design for Ella the elephant, as part of the Ella_phant Competition - either via social media using the hashtag #MaclarenElla_phant, online at, via email to or by collecting an Ella-phant colouring-in sheet from a variety of central London restaurants, retailers and hotels.
